“SPIRITUS” (2017)- A Film By L.C. Holt

“It’s lonely being dead…”

The first thing I found when I sat down to watch Spiritus, is that it is a complicated film. It’s not complicated in a negative way but it definitley demands your attention. In viewing it you feel at times like you are watching an anthology with only one story. The characters drive the tale in this case and you are presented with several different viewpoints and perspectives from different characters within the same narrative. While a bit confusing at first, it all ties together quite nicely if you are paying close enough attention.

Spiritus centers around the suicide, or possible murder of Marjorie, a young girl battling bipolar depression, and a small circle of her friends. An amateur film maker, Dean, wants to bring awareness to the troubles surrounding depression but soon finds there may be more to Marjorie’s story. We are presented with a colorfull idea of how different people deal with the feelings of grief after someone they care about passes on. As we learn more and go further down the rabbit hole, we begin to realize maybe it’s not just grief the friends are feeling, but guilt as well. Was Marjorie’s death a suicide? Was it cold blooded murder? One thing is for sure, sometimes the dead come back to set their story straight, and sometimes there is hell to pay. Marjorie’s coming back for a visit…pray she’s not coming for you.

There were a few things that stood out to me in L.C. Holt’s directorial debut. The use of sound and lack thereof at certain points in the film are excellent. Not just music, but whispers from beyond are used to convey fear or uneasiness in characters. The camera angles were well thought out and the film was shot in a style I found to be similar to Carpenters early work. Not just wide or close shots, but the yaw of the camera was quite well done. The lighting was also utalized nicely in both interior and exterior shots. It never felt unnatural or staged. I feel the overall story was well written and scripted and L.C. had a very clear vision which shows when viewing the film.

Final Thoughts:

This is Mr.Holt’s first film as a director and based on it’s merits I can say I am excited to see what he does next. I would give it 4/5 stars. I recommend you see it, and when you do, see it twice to fully take in all of the details.

Well Freaks, that ends another review. As always I have knives to sharpen and bodies to dispose of. See you next time!

Oh and that noise you heard in the dark? Probably your imagination. Unless you know Marjorie…..
