Review of “The Plague”

Review by: Amanda Blake of Horror Movie Freaks

Directed by: Emir Skalonja

So, you’re hanging out as you normally would, it’s just another day. Or is it? Maybe some kind of plague has infested without you knowing about it? Flesh hungry, deteriorating beings, may change your mind on that! You follow a small group that comes together, you have a boyfriend and girlfriend, that meets up with a brother and sister eventually. They end up having to work together as a team to survive. You also see someone that may be a church priest? Or is he just a religious nut?

This movie was pretty awesome. It was shot well, realistic and even included some humor between siblings. No one ever gets along with their siblings, so this gave a majorly realistic view on sibling rivalry/relationship. The boyfriend and girlfriend team seem to be a couple that enjoy mercenary work together. What’s a relationship without killing some people?

The plagued/zombies looked awesome. I really loved how the makeup was not overdone, the growling effects showed a side that was actually very unnerving, in a great way.  I also enjoyed the way they moved. They were very creepy and very intimidating. You could see how mindless and hungry they were.

The actors and actresses in the movie had some great roles too. You had the one in every movie that you could not wait to see their death, the siblings that always seemed to argue, and the couple where the guy did all the dirty, heavy work.

The dialogue in this movie was great! The brother and sister banter was funny and realistic. There’s even some political fun which gave it a more updated feel. This movie was not over-filled with dialogue and there was plenty of action to go around. I really enjoyed this one!

The last thing I really enjoyed on this movie was the music. The suspenseful music was in just the right place at the right times. For me, the suspense built up with the music matched just right is a big thing.  This had it spot on and kept me on the edge.

I give this one an 8/10! Make sure to catch this movie!

MyIndie Productions: The Beginning

You already know that the group here at HMF have a deep love for Independent Horror, and that’s why we enjoy the work our friends at MyIndie Productions are doing. While HMF focuses on the Horror elements in film, television and other mediums, MIP is out there covering the entire world of independent film. Their short films have proven to be very powerful, not only in the way they’re filmed, but with every aspect. The actor’s dedicated work, the director’s attention to detail in every shot, no matter what it is, are what makes their work stand out. After viewing their work and getting to speak with Itai Guberman on an almost daily basis, it is no surprise to me that MIP will be a force in the world of Independent film.

It all started for me when I spoke to Itai, and ended up getting invited to review his short films “Dolphin” and (My personal favorite) “Third Temple”. Both were absolutely fantastic and I knew then that Itai was going places. I can’t wait to see what else they will be giving us to watch in the future, but I know it’ll be great! Now, I will be doing a more in depth piece about MyIndie, but I just had to get the name out there to our Faithful Freaks, Hop over to their site and witness the future of Indie Film for yourselves. Be sure to come back and look for the followup.

Interview with Nathan Baesel (BEHIND THE MASK: THE RISE OF LESLIE VERNON)

First and foremost, Nathan started out by calling me Zakaria (which is completely awesome). Extremely easy to talk to and a very laid back guy, Nathan Baesel gave me some insight on roles, inspiration and growing up around the world of acting! Here is some Q&A from the man BEHIND THE MASK: THE RISE OF LESLIE VERNON

HMF: What is it that initially got you into acting/show business?

NB: My family did church plays, holiday musicals that kind of thing growing up. Then my older brothers did theater in high school and I did anything they did.

HMF: It’s always nice when family is involved as well! Which role that you have had are you most proud of?

NB: Leslie Vernon of course. I’ve done a lot of theater projects that have been breakthrough experiences, but BTM offered an unbelievable opportunity to have a breakthrough experience in an unusually public way. The film’s reach gets more impressive every year.

HMF:  How did you end up getting the role?

NB: Audition. One of the few projects where you read the script, you’re excited about it. You book it and it turns out even better than you imagined.

HMF: I couldn’t agree more. It was such a breath of fresh air. Is horror a genre that you have always loved? (to preface, the answer provided is one of the coolest answers I have ever received)

NB: It’s a genre I’ve always respected because I’ve always feared it. Like the ocean. (HOW AWESOME IS THAT ANSWER???)

HMF: That’s a very good way to put it. What would you say is your favorite horror film and why?

NB: I just watched The Exorcist again last weekend. Watched it with my 14 year old. His first time. That thing still packs a punch.

HMF: Do you have any upcoming projects that you are excited for? What does your future hold for you with acting?

NB: I get more out of teaching than acting these days but I’m steering my acting studio, Deviate Studios toward projects that’ll offer the chance to work with my students as an acting partner. That’ll be fun. (https://www.deviatestudios.com/)

HMF:  Can you see yourself working in the horror genre again?

NB: Sure. I’m in no rush though. The right project might come along in time.

HMF: Who are some of the actors that you admire or pay particular attention to?

NB: I just saw a fantastic performance by Janice Rule in The Chase. An interesting though not great movie but it featured some great acting and my introduction to Rule who out-shined Brando. I’m looking forward to checking out more of her work.

HMF:  Lastly (I usually ask) what are your top 5 favorite films of all time? If you HAD to choose?

NB: Godfather: Part 1, Die Hard, The Hunt for Red October, Amadeus and The Big Lebowski

Nathan is a super cool guy and very relaxed! Was a massive pleasure to speak with him and very kind that he took the time out of his schedule to speak with us! Hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did! Stay scared all!

Review for Savage

Review By: Amanda Blake of Horror Movie Freaks

Director: Emir Skalonja

This movie starts out with a little explanation of how the world has gone into an apocalypse, a modern-day apocalypse. It’s not your typical end of the world, here come the zombies type of apocalypse either. It is a very believable scenario, where the world has gone into anarchy and people are out for themselves. In particular, you have a small group that the movie is centered on that consists of a man, pregnant woman, and their friend. On the other side you have a small group of hungry cannibals (no, not zombies, I already said that).

I love that this movie was very realistic, there was some cheesy parts, but that’s what makes a movie great. You definitely have to have those bits. The fighting even had me on edge. It was so realistic and the characters did not have unlimited stamina. You know, they have this incredible wire work fight, jumping off walls and over people, never ever get tired out, always the same. Not this movie.

The soundtrack was absolutely killer. It was a little overbearing on what dialog there was, some parts were harder to hear than others, but really did not affect the movie itself. That’s another thing, it was not filled up with a bunch of dialog that wasn’t needed. It was very straightforward.

The survival style was also awesome. You had the people that went out and scavenged for food, then you had the “others”. They preferred their food raw and bloody. I mean, if you were out on your own with no other way to eat, how are you going to eat? These guys were very resourceful. This brings me to another part, being resourceful. Another much needed piece to a good survival movie. The guy didn’t run around with a gun, with unlimited ammo (how annoying when that happens, right?). He used a knife and his fists for the most part. He grabbed what he could along the way, as you watch the hunted become the hunter.

Overall, this movie was filmed uniquely and made it one of a kind. I really enjoyed it myself. It was well done. I was left wanting to see more and hope to see more someday.

I give this movie an 8/10! It’s definitely worth a watch, especially if you’re looking for a good, violent survival movie!
